Mark Paine é Professor Convidado - Bioquímica dos Insectos e as suas áreas de trabalho são:

  1. investigação dos mecanismos moleculares de resistência a inseticidas e na aplicação desse conhecimento no desenvolvimento de soluções práticas para o controlo de doenças tropicais. Os mosquitos e os flebótomos são o principal foco desse trabalho, sendo responsáveis pela transmissão da malária, dos arbovírus e da leishmaniose.
  2. Identificação de proteínas associadas à resistência e investigação sobre o funcionamento do processo de desintoxicação destinado a desenvolver métodos para prever e monitorizar a resistência.
  3. Desenvolvimento de métodos de diagnóstico para deteção e monitorização de inseticidas (Kits de Quantificação de Inseticidas) conjuntamente com o Consórcio “Innovative Vector Control Consortium” (IVCC) para a produção de inseticidas, formulações e ferramentas de apoio à decisão para reduzir a transmissão de doenças.
